School is winding down, and for seniors at Cypress Bay and Western high schools that means the prom, graduation and, for some students, scholarship loot.
The Rotary Club of Weston presented almost $50,000 worth of scholarships to 39 students at its annual breakfast May 20 at Weston Hills Country Club. The awards ranged from $500 to $4,000. The scholarship fund was double last year's.
The scholarship donors included restaurants, banks and other businesses in Weston. Some businesses donated money directly, while others were sponsors in the club's two annual fund-raising events -- a golf tournament and a half-marathon.
"We're so grateful for the generosity of our sponsors who continuously support and believe in us," said Ken Ruiz, a Rotary past president. "They truly help us make a difference in the lives of our future leaders, the senior class of 2004."
It was the first year the Rotary awarded scholarships to Cypress Bay High in Weston. The school, which opened in the fall of 2002, is graduating its first class. Until Cypress Bay opened, most Weston students attended Western High in Davie, and many continue to attend that school. The Weston Rotary has given scholarships to Western High students for more than a decade, Ruiz said.
Winners from Western High were: Crystal Bohn, Davin Camara, Marissa Carrillo, Rubi Chung, Kristin Everett, Phara Francois, Holly Greenberg, Melissa Harrison, Lyn Hyekyeng, Karoline Korah, Robert Koutsoyannis, Jilian Lozada, Praxi Mittal, Natasha Padron, Robyn Rosasco, Stephanie Ruiz, Jarred Torres, Carolina Vasquez, Megan Williams.
